5 reasons why 3d walkthroughs are the future of the renovation industry

You are likely already familiar with the concept of a 3D walkthrough (which is a virtual experience wherein you can view and move through a particular location represented digitally) but you might not be aware of their many advantages in the interior design and architecture industry.

As an interior designer, I’m familiar with the intricate process of bringing designs to life. However, I find visualising the final outcome can be challenging for my clients. This is where photorealistic visuals and 3D walkthroughs come in: a game-changing tool that offers a clear vision of our designs. In this newsletter, I’ll explore how 3D walkthroughs benefit clients by enhancing communication, reducing errors and streamlining projects.

  1. Let’s imagine that you would like to restore and refurbish an old home; you know what you’d like and you discussed your vision with your interior designer but your partner is not entirely sold on the idea of a refurb. To convince your spouse/partner to support the project, you could demonstrate the project effectively through visuals and a virtual tour. Showcasing a building or setting through a virtual walking experience is a great way to give a thorough view and understanding of the changes and possible transformation.  Check out an example of a single room walkthrough. This en-suite bathroom has undergone a big transformation- and although the visuals speak volume of the space, I truly think you get a better feel of the space in this 3D mini walkthrough.

2. Detailed presentation- 3D video walkthroughs showcase the full architectural plan and capture every detail, including fixtures, furniture, and materials. This makes these detailed videos extremely engaging and accurate points of reference for you the client, but also for any future buyers. You, as a client,  can get a better sense of the scale, proportion, and spatial relationships of the project. You can see how your space will look and feel before it’s even built, which can help you make informed decisions and provide valuable feedback for the team involved in the construction. We often find any subcontractors greatly benefit of our 3D visuals and a 3D walkthrough is an excellent reference point they can use throughout the project.

3. Holistic interior and exterior views — Unlike 2D imagery and concept sketches, 3D video walkthroughs give a broader perspective to the viewer. With these videos, we can display a better and more complete picture of your property — including interior details of rooms and other spaces, outdoor areas, even exterior walls and features. I love how easy it is to click on the plan and you can be immediately transported into the room of your choice.

4. Reduced errors and revisions- By creating a 3D model of a building or space, architects and interior designers can assess the design and make changes before construction begins. This can help identify potential problems or design flaws early on, reducing the need for expensive and time-consuming revisions during the construction process (we all want to avoid that). For example, interior architects can use a 3D walkthrough to assess whether the placement of windows will allow for sufficient natural light, or if there are any spatial issues that need to be addressed. By catching these issues early, interior designers and architects can make changes in the virtual model and avoid potential costly mistakes.

  1. While not all 3D tours are built with the same level of detail and care, there is no doubt that they offer a much more immersive and captivating experience than a 2D animation, a set of drawings or I would go as far as saying 3D visuals. Anyone who takes part in the 3D walkthrough experience will be able to learn more about the project layout, objects inside, and key features.
