7 tips on how to create the best design for a home cinema room
How do you design a cinema room?
A home movie room is not a sofa and a screen in a room. If you want to do this right, you’ll want to meet some bare minimums, like controlling outside light and casting a large enough picture. Follow these tips for creating a movie room in your home.
First and foremost:
1. Dedicate a separate space to your cinema room;
Ideally, you should dedicate a separate space to achieve the best cinematic experience.
Seating in the cinema room is also very important- having the right size recliner sofa can be a deal breaker. That’s why we love this bespoke velvet sofa, adorned with plush bespoke cushions that invites relaxation and leisure. Its neutral tone seamlessly blends with the room’s overall colour scheme, creating a harmonious ambiance. The sofa’s generous size offers ample seating space for family and friends to gather for a movie night.

Tip number 2 – Control Ambient Light (Ambient light means light from sources outside of the movie room, like light coming from windows, under and around doors, and from artificial light within the room).
In this cinema room we placed soft, warm lighting fixtures strategically around the room, they are casting a gentle glow that enhances the room’s cozy ambiance.
The room has blackout window treatments in the form of blinds- we highly recommend battery operated black out blinds or if you have the AV system installed, getting them connected so you have a full control of the natural light coming into the room.

Tip number 3: Invest in AV Components; ideally this would be designed by the AV company that specialises in cinema room installations.
AV components are very important if you want to truly achieve that cinema feel; these include a soundbar, speaker, receiver, or amplifier that can provide high-quality sound output. A video system comprises a TV, a projector, and or a screen. The projector should be bright enough to display a clear image, and the screen should be large enough to provide an immersive experience.

Tip number 4- Make the room like a cinema- think wall sconces and comfortable seating; tiered seating is a true luxury like we’ve planned in this cinema room (visual above).
Tip number 5- Plan a robust, flexible lighting; cinema light control means the ability to turn lights on and off or to graduate that light within the cinema space. Soffits, rope lights, dimmers, and recessed lights form the backbone of many owner-built home movie rooms.
Tip number 6- Limit Reflective objects- Anything that isn’t the screen itself and which reflects light back at the viewer should be minimised or avoided.
Tip number 7- Keep it simple- Avoid the temptation to load up your home movie room with curios and tchotchkes near the screen.
