What we did: 

To achieve the space out clients asked for, i.e. a bigger kitchen, a much bigger dining space to enable them to cook and entertain more, we completely flipped the developers’ original layout. What used to be a rather small kitchen and dining that allowed a small table that could sit maximum four people, is now a perfectly formed living room with a custom made sofa (none of the off the shelf or ‘customisable’ ones would actually fit). What used to be a large living room is now a beautiful open plan kitchen with a breakfast bar and dining that allows to entertain large dinner parties- you could sit 12 people. In order to achieve all of this, apart from flipping the layout, we also had to carefully think about the flow and natural light in the space. Instead of completely blocking the door to the previous living area, we designed a shelving that served as a focal point and provided space to display favourite items; it also allowed plenty of natural light to bounce through the large garden sliding doors into the hallway. Another important space design element was the creation of the new entrance point to the open plan space through the living area- we opted for the pocket door that ensured an easy flow of the space in the corridor.
