A greener home, a healthier you
We spend more time at home than ever before—so why shouldn’t our spaces work for us and the planet?
In 2025, homeowners aren’t just looking to renovate—they’re reimagining what “home” means. There’s a growing shift toward sustainable and wellness-focused upgrades that prioritise comfort, efficiency, and inner calm. Whether you’re planning a full renovation or a few thoughtful changes, here are some transformative ideas to consider.
Sustainability that Goes Beyond Aesthetics
1. Energy-Efficient Systems
Upgrading to smart thermostats, solar panels, and triple-glazed windows doesn’t just reduce your carbon footprint—it significantly lowers utility bills, too. These long-term investments are now more accessible than ever.
2. Natural Materials
Swapping out synthetic finishes for natural or reclaimed wood, and lime-based paints is a new standard. These eco-conscious materials bring both warmth and sustainability into your space.
3. Low-Waste Living Starts at Home
From composting bins built into kitchen units to greywater recycling systems, homeowners are exploring ways to reduce waste and repurpose resources within their homes.
Case Study: Becky & Nigel, a couple from Huntingtonshire, invested in double-glazed windows in their period property, smart thermostats and smart lighting, cutting their energy bills by over 30%. How you may ask? Installing a Control4 smart home automation system allows to automatically adjust lighting, heating and cooling based on occupancy, time of day and other factors- all of these lead to better energy management.
Mini Retreats at Home
Bathrooms and bedrooms are evolving into sanctuaries. Expect rainfall showers, warm lighting and deep soaking tubs.
It’s not about luxury—it’s about quality of life.
Case Study 1: We turned this bathroom into a true mini sanctuary- a large walk-in shower with a space to sit and relax and a deep soaking tub for two- thanks to the new layout this bathroom is a true mini retreat. See more photos of this project here.
Case Study 2: This bedroom used to look very different- the foot of the bed was facing the door (a no!no! in Feng Shui) and it completely lacked storage. Now, it has three distinctive zones- sleeping with a hidden TV, fabulous mini retreat feature, reading and dressing- all achieved with clever planning and finishes of course.
Wellness Design: Living Spaces that Heal
1. Biophillic Elements
Incorporate natural light and houseplants, and even indoor water features or green walls. These elements boost mood, regulate circadian rhythms, and purify the air.
2. Clean Air, Naturally
Improved ventilation systems, salt lamps, and toxin-free finishes (look for zero-VOC paints) create healthier breathing environments, especially crucial in cities. For zero- VOC paints, we highly recommend Kraftsmann Paints- they’re not available in the UK but we can get them delivered for our clients within a few days. Read more about their paints here.
3. Mindful Layouts
Design isn’t just visual—it’s emotional. Thoughtful layouts that reduce clutter and encourage natural flow help reduce stress and promote rest.
→ Case Study: After converting an unused spare room into a “meditation den,” Sue from Cambridge saw a measurable drop in her anxiety levels—thanks to a perfectly shaped meditation chair, soft textures, earth tones, clever lighting and a few carefully placed plants.
Final Thoughts
Upgrading your home with wellness and sustainability in mind doesn’t have to mean overhauling everything, although if you’d like to see a big impact, this usually requires big changes. Having said that, sometimes, even small changes can create a ripple effect—not just on your energy bills or the environment, but on your day-to-day mood, focus, and sleep, which I am a big advocate for.
If you’re planning a renovation, it’s worth asking not just what looks good, but what feels good—and does good too.
Stay tuned—we’ll be sharing more real-life stories of homeowners who’ve made the shift to a more sustainable, nurturing home life here and in our social media channels.
