Brief: We were appointed to completely renovate approximately 237 square metres spread across 3 floors.
Our journey began with clients who had a clear and vivid vision of their dream home. As devoted designers, our utmost desire was to help this young family turn their aspirations into reality. Their journey started with a pivotal decision – selecting the right house. Their initial choice would likely have fallen short of fulfilling their desires and proven costlier in the long run. Recognising this, we guided them toward a property that aligned perfectly with their vision.
Our mission was to breathe new life into this timeless abode, celebrating its architectural heritage while infusing it with a modern Scandinavian touch.
The project presented its fair share of challenges, but it was in overcoming these hurdles that the true essence of our collaboration was revealed. Two significant tasks loomed ahead: the redesign of the guest bathroom on the second floor and a complete overhaul of the kitchen.
In the case of the guest bathroom, we faced the challenge of ensuring functionality and an open feel despite limited square footage and sloping ceilings. We crafted a walk-in shower with a thoughtfully designed glass panel that efficiently separated it from the WC. On the opposite side, a sink area presented its own set of challenges due to the sloping roof. Despite this, our commitment to achieving the desired functionality and aesthetics prevailed. We successfully integrated a mirror in front of the sink, carefully choosing the sink and mirror cabinet to maximise the space. We also strived to avoid overburdening the ceiling with downlights, opting instead for beautiful wall lights that surrounded a compact mirror.
The kitchen transformation was another exciting yet demanding endeavor. The clients appreciated the existing layout but desired different fronts and a new worktop. Moreover, they wished to replace the AGA with modern ovens. This required careful consideration of the kitchen’s new design, particularly the depth available for an oven cabinet. In this aspect, our choice of a Bora cooktop with an integrated extractor, fitting seamlessly into the space of the old chimney breast, was a stroke of perfection.
The property’s three floors have been meticulously redesigned to offer a seamless flow and an abundance of natural light. From the welcoming ground floor to the serene retreat of the master ensuite on the top floor, every inch of this home exudes a sense of calm and sophistication.
In a tribute to Scandinavian design principles, we focused on maximising simplicity, functionality, and a connection to nature. A colour palette dominated by soft neutrals and earthy tones, coupled with carefully selected furnishings, creates an atmosphere of warmth and tranquility throughout.
In keeping with the Scandinavian style that the clients desired, we selected natural materials of both provenance and appearance. This included the use of white-washed oak and walnut for a touch of elegance. We sourced all wood flooring from Eco Hardwood. We also incorporated wood-effect tiles for high-traffic areas on the ground floor. Neutral colour paints from Benjamin Moore were employed to create a soothing and cohesive ambiance throughout the home.
One heartwarming anecdote that emerged from the project was the utilisation of the space under the stairs. Drawing inspiration from a past project where creativity maximised every inch of space, I proposed transforming it into ‘Harry’s Room.’ This thoughtful gesture, designed to be enjoyed by my clients’ daughter, resonated deeply with them. As the husband was to have his own VR room, and their daughter was to have her secret hiding place under the stairs, the idea was embraced with enthusiasm. In fact, it sparked the delightful notion of fitting a bathtub into what was originally planned as another guest bedroom, ultimately evolving into a serene relaxation room.
This project was more than just a renovation; it was the creation of a cherished family haven where dreams, practicality, and Scandinavian comfort harmoniously converge. Each challenge we surmounted and every creative choice we made reflects our unwavering dedication to crafting a home that encapsulates the essence of a young family.
